It’s gold again (and again)!

Heywood’s fencing team has had a busy term already and is going from strength to strength.

One of our Year 6 girls recently won gold in the U11 foil competition in Newcastle. Competition was fierce and she was ranked first after the pool rounds, only having one defeat. Direct elimination went well until the quarterfinals when she came up against the girl who knocked her out of Challenge Wratislavia in Poland earlier this year. However, she composed herself and emerged a deserved 10-7 winner. The semi-final was a 10-1 procession – clearly fired up from her previous bout. The final was then fiercely fought, with neither girl ever more than one hit in front. The victory was Heywood’s with a score of 10-7.

Congratulations to our Heywood foil team who, together with a Heywood alumni school pupil, formed a team to win gold at the U11 southern region foil last week.

With over 10 teams in the competition from schools in Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Competition was stiff and they fought through to the final, to win overall and be undefeated all day. Our second team narrowly missed out on the medals, finishing 5th.
