British Bronze Double

Last weekend one of our Year 6 girls joined 1500 children to participate in the British National Youth Fencing Championships held at the prestigious English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.  Going into this event she had already created her own little piece of Heywood history by being the first ever pupil to qualify in two disciplines – foil and epee in the U12 age group.

In girls foil she won her pool,  only receiving 8 hits against her in 6 matches against 30 scored and was ranked second overall receiving bye rounds. She dispatched her first opponent 10-0, then 10-6 and in the semi-final fought all the way, eventually losing 10-4.

In the Girls Epee she won her 5  pool fights, receiving 10 hits against 25 scored.  This ranked her 4th and again she received bye rounds. When she fought she won 10-4 and 10-6, before losing 10-6 to the eventual winner 10-6.  However, by that stage history had been made as she is was the only competitor in the whole event to win two medals at the weekend. An incredible performance from an incredible fencer. Well done!
