To infinity and beyond…

The Heywood Helios (this year’s Y6 Lego robotics team) are well on the way to another successful showing at our regional First Lego League competition. This year, the theme of the mission is, ‘Into Orbit…’

Numerous challenging missions have to be solved by designing, building and programming an autonomous robot, using a host of sensors and outputs. In addition to the robotics aspect, the team have been working hard to solve a problem which humans face when in space. Lots of research has been conducted, expert advice has been sought and a few prototypes for an innovative invention have already been created. Watch this space for more information!

The team are relishing the prospect of the challenges brought on by this competition which combines their knowledge and understanding from Science and Computer Science as well as other aspects of our (award winning!!) STEM curriculum at Heywood Prep. Underpinning all of the learning and excitement of the competition are the First Lego League core values which tie in with Heywood Prep’s Language for learning.

Collaboration & Communication – when sharing ideas, tinkering with designs and debugging code
Commitment – pupils have been coming in during break times to continue working on robots, refining and developing their programming
Compassion – helping to pick up our team mates when they maybe find a challenge overwhelming
Craftsmanship & Creativity – when designing and building both the robot and our solution to the STEM problem.
Curiosity – when researching and gathering ideas for problems astronauts encounter in space.
Confidence – presenting our STEM project to an exhibition centre of fellow competitors.

To infinity, and beyond!
