Reception

Welcome to Reception

We can’t believe we have already reached the start of the children’s last term in Reception, where has the time gone? The have all settled in well to Reception and are well aware of the expectations of school life. This term, we will be supporting the children in furthering their learning, gradually increasing the demands made on them in preparation for the transition into Year One.

Our two exciting themes this term will be ‘Dinosaurs’ and ‘Out of the Box’. During our ‘Out Of the Box’ theme, a variety of topics will be revealed from the box. During the first week we will be looking at zoos and jungles and to bring this to life we will be visiting Cotswold Wildlife Park. A letter with further details of this visit will be sent in due course and we will also be hoping to take a few parent volunteers with us on the day.

Our final class assemblies will be on Friday 19th May (RL) and Friday 26th May(RV), so please come and watch!

Just to remind you that our ‘Open Day’ is on Saturday 13th May. We will have lots of exciting activities on offer linked to our theme so please join us.

This term we would like to see the children becoming increasingly independent as Year 1 is just around the corner! We would like the children to begin to come into the classroom by themselves so that they can take responsibility for organising themselves and their belongings. We will be using this as our target within the classroom and the children will be able to move up the beanstalk if they can come into the classroom independently.

Please do continue to inform us of any achievements or interesting events in your child’s life by filling in the ‘wow moment' slips. Thank you so much for all the information you have provided so far.

During the term the children will receive another target card and an end of year report. We are confident that your child will have a happy, productive and enjoyable final term.

Please see the attached timetables and curriculum map for further details of our work in Reception.

More about Reception at Heywood

At Heywood Prep we believe that play is at the heart of all learning. In the Early Years Foundation Stage the children follow the EYFS Framework. They are encouraged to experience a wide range of activities to ensure that they develop as well rounded, independent learners.

The EYFS consists of 7 areas of learning. These are broken down into prime and specific areas.

The 3 prime areas are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The 4 specific areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

The children socialise and learn alongside each other, with Mrs Lawrence, Miss Vernon and our TA Miss Lewis working closely together to ensure that each child experiences a wide range of activities and opportunities. Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning so that they can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.  At all times the children’s learning is regularly assessed to ensure that each child can reach their full potential.

The children will also receive weekly lessons by specialist teachers for swimming, music, singing and PE.
