Background
Heywood School is a privately owned Independent School located in rural the town of Corsham, Wiltshire. The nearest cities are Bath, which is 10 miles away and Bristol which is 12 miles beyond Bath.
The school was first registered with the Department of Education in 1940 and has been on the present site since 1953.
The school stands within two acres of grounds in the centre of the town and close to Corsham Court. The site is mentioned in the Domesday Book as being donated to an order of monks for the construction of a priory. The grounds still contain part of the ruins of the original priory from which the school and street in which it stands derive their names.
The main school is a Grade II listed Georgian building constructed in Bath stone in 1776 and houses most of the classrooms, library, dedicated ICT suite, school office, staff room and cloakrooms. Other buildings include a barn converted to a kitchen and dining room, purpose built science block, art room and multi-purpose hall serving as a gymnasium and theatre.
A separate building, formerly the Corsham Fire Station, is used by ‘Wigwam’, Heywood’s own Nursery School.
The outside area has a playing field, netball court, an all-weather sports court, two playgrounds, two garden areas and a numeracy trail.
